Burn Me Once

by Deborah Horton on July 29, 2010

Kickoff at Vaught-Hemingway
Reports have it that Houston Nutt and Ole Miss are considering giving ex Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli another chance to play.  Word has it that Masoli may get in to Ole Miss on a little known NCAA rule.  I understand Nutt’s need for a QB since Raymond Cotton hit the road, but has he forgotten what happened with Jamar Hornsby just last year?  Nutt may be about to get burned again.

Moronia

Blue Planet?
I think that Lane Kiffin inhabits a planet where everyone who lives there makes idiotic decisions, says stupid things, and generally acts like a moron.  Pretty sure the name of the place is moronia.  It’s the only place where a guy like Kiffin could possibly feel comfortable.

Way back in mid May I wrote a blog about USC paying Kiffin 4 million dollars to coach.  I said in that blog that it would only be a short, short time before Kiffin embarrassed himself and the university.  It is now a little over 2 months later and lo and behold Kiffin has gotten his new employer embroiled in a lawsuit.  Good thing he’s got the planet of moronia to run to as it will soon be the only place he can live.

Pssst, Hey Kid

watch
Almost every day this week a new story has come out about college players violating NCAA rules regarding agent contact.  The USC story continues to evolve with Reggie Bush being erased from USC history and a beach party in Florida involving several current NCAA players.  Add to that a Nick Saban rant on agents roles in all of this and you have a story that’s just not going away anytime soon.

face painted fan
Tim Tebow hasn’t taken a single NFL game snap for the Denver Broncos and he’s already the second coming of John Elway.  Selling the most jerseys at NFLshops.com and now he has his own shoe at Nike.  A orange and blue Florida color trainer.  What is it that makes Tebow so popular?

Tebow has of course received more media coverage on outlets like ESPN than just about anyone other than LeBron.  ESPN just LOVES to cover Tebow.  He is their go to story for anything college football related.  To most sports media outlets Tebow IS college football.  Their own personal Jesus as it were.

Be Great

Alabama vs Vanderbilt, 2007
Creative Commons License photo credit: Matthew ToshWhat does it really mean to be great in sports?  Is it about winning championships?  Is it about forming a dynasty?  Is it about breaking records and piling up stats/  What does it mean to truly be great?

In college football coaching to be great is to be Vanderbilt’s Bobby Johnson.  No, he wasn’t the coach hoisting the BCS trophy every year.  No, he wasn’t the coach atop the SEC standings every year.  No, he wasn’t the coach on the front pages of the papers and in the sports blogs every day.  He was just the man who wanted the young men he coached to be great.  Great men of character.

Hair Of The Dawg

University of Georgia - Athens, GA
The University of Georgia athletic department may want to consider instituting DUI avoidance training for everyone involved in the program.  There seems to be a disturbing pattern evolving and negative publicity is just one of the problems the school is dealing with in the aftermath.

First, athletic director Damon Evans was stopped under suspicion of DUI.  To make matters worse, he asked the officer not to arrest him, to take him to a motel, and more or less keep it on the quiet.  That was of course refused.  Evans was then forced to resign as AD and further humiliated when it was released he was with a 28 year old woman who was not his wife during the alleged DUI incident.  The school was embarrassed and now the athletic department is searching for a new permanent AD.

It’s Never Too Early…Or Is It?

Florida State University Wallpaper I
Florida State University has gotten the jump on the competition and I don’t mean the upcoming games to be played, but the Heisman trophy candidates.  That’s right people, FSU has officially launched with the approval of head coach Jimbo Fisher, the Christian Ponder for Heisman website.  I kid you not.

Not one single down has been played in this season’s college football and FSU has already started their campaign for Ponder.  The site has everything – stats, media guide, build your own Ponder wallpaper, Ponder’s playlist.  It’s got it all.  And it’s freakin ridiculous.

64

by Deborah Horton on June 28, 2010

Lotsa Red
I’ve read a lot of sports articles in my time and I’ve read a lot of pre-season college football polls.  Sometimes the two have one thing in common, the need for someone to put down the crack pipe immediately.  The Orlando Sentinel has been counting down the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision teams and guess who they put at 64?  Go ahead, guess.  I dare you to get it right.

Time’s up.  It’s the University of Georgia.  Seriously, pipe confiscation should be a requirement for some sports writers.  There is no way and I mean no way Georgia is ranked at 64.  None.  Even with their “numbers” analysis, it doesn’t add up.

And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going

texas snuggie group
I’ve always admired the Texas football program.  The tradition.  The bigger than life aspect.  The love of football.  I now admire them for sticking with the Big 12.  Now, I know they only did this for the money.  The reduced Big 12 teams stand to make 20 million per year in TV revenue, more than SEC teams make.  So their motives aren’t all that altruistic, but they did stay at the dance with the one who brought them and in the process saved the Big 12 from certain destruction.

Memorial Stadium
And so the seismic shifts in college football have begun.  Boise State moves to the Mountain West.  Colorado moves to the Pac 10.  Nebraska moves to the Big 10.  Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State are all considering moves to the Pac 10.  Texas A&M seems on the fence about the Pac 10 or the SEC.  Now, the United States Congress has decided to get involved and hold hearings in July about realignment and Texas officials said they would meet next week to discuss the possible breakup of the Big 12.  What’s that sound you hear? Cha-ching…it’s the sound of money.
