NFL Draft

Blinged out boardroom facilities

This is where the NFL hangs in the balance–an office.

It appears that we have a war of words going on between owners and players over the rookie salary scale.  Right now the youngest and most unproven players on a team make the most money.  Roger Goodell has even said they were “wasting money”.  So, what now?  Well, the NFLPA went to the owners and the owners didn’t like it so much:

Raiders Could Release Jamarcus Russell?

by Patton on April 28, 2010

Oakland Raiders JaMarcus Russell

Apparently, the Raiders are over it.  I mean, if you’ve paid a guy $36 million since 2007 and he hasn’t done a damn thing for you then I guess it’s time, but this is pretty new for us.

It’s been quite a while since the Raiders did more than one smart thing in the course of a calendar year.  Now, they’ve done ALOT of smart things in the course of about a month.

They had a great draft by all accounts–the experts that is–they didn’t take any stupid picks that I could tell.  They traded for Jason Campbell.  Everything has been relatively quiet.  Now, they are going to pull the biggest “holy crap” moment in a long time.

Jason Campbell To The Raiders

Raiders vs. Ravens

Strike up the band–maybe.

This poor kid.  The Redskins traded Jason Campbell to the Raiders.  I know, I don’t want to cry for him Argentina, but I still kinda hurts just to think about it.  I suppose this is a lesson in what the NFL is–a business.  As nice a guy as Mike Shanahan may be and as nice a kid as Jason Campbell is–stuff like this must happen to keep the league moving.

McCoy Goes To The Browns

Colt McCoy had to wait until the 3rd Round to go to the Cleveland Browns yesterday and it kind of shocked me.  Think about how far he fell compared to where he was before his arm went “dead” in the national title game.  However, he may have landed in a nice situation with a completely revamped Browns team.  Jake Delhomme just came to town and that means McCoy is the protege–but for how long?

USC Gets Mixed Message

by Patton on April 24, 2010

2010 NFL Draft

The Jets took USC‘s Joe McKnight in the 4th Round and now they have a running/passing threat coming out of the backfield.  This basically makes things more unfair for them since they have LDT, Shonn Greene, and now they’ve just drafted Joe McKnight.  They will hit the field with the best offense in football on day one next season.

Taylor Mays got drafted by the 49ers after he was passed over by Pete Carroll and the Seahawks and now he’s got some problems with that.  I’m not understanding where these don’t understand that they don’t have to have their butts kissed every second of every day, but now that Mays is in San Fran he better get ready to stop complaining because I’m already mad that he a 49er.

NFl Draft: Looking at the second round

by David on April 23, 2010

2010 NFL Draft - C McCoyPatton wrote earlier today that if Jimmy Clausen is still available at #52 that the Steelers will take him. I disagree only because I don’t think he will still be there.

So where does he go? Why Cleveland (38th overall pick), Oakland (39th) and Buffalo (41st) and are the logical choices as they all need quarterbacks, I would not be surprised to see Clausen slide to the Kansas City Chiefs at #50. The Chiefs offensive coordinator is former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis all the .

NFL Draft: 1st Round Thoughts

by David on April 23, 2010

2010 NFL Draft - TebowIn my pre-draft analysis yesterday I wrote that the first big decision was Cleveland at number 7, and if they did not pick Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, that he would slide a long way. I just did not expect him to slide all the way out of the first round.

The top seven was as I expected them to be. No surprises there. The surprises came at 8,9 and 10. The Raiders as usual overreached for McClain, the Bills took another return guy and the Jaguars took Alualu about 10 places above where everyone had him going. Not a good first round for those three teams.

NFL Draft–Where’s Jimmy?

by Patton on April 23, 2010

Steelers Forged in genius is what it is.

Jimmy Clausen must have had the crappiest night in the history of the draft.

When Brady Quinn had to sit there til late in the first round when the Browns took him as a “pity pick” it was sad.  You actually felt bad for him–and now we have the odd story of Jimmy Clausen.

The Bills didn’t take him.  The Redskins no longer needed a QB.  The Steelers didn’t make a trade.  The Jags didn’t take him.  The Broncos TOOK Tim Tebow, and Jimmy still sits on the board.

2010 NFL DraftThe NFL Draft is coming up soon and I expect the first six picks in the draft to be:

1. St. Louis: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
The Rams cannot afford to pass on their quarterback of the future. Bradford gives reason for hope.

2. Detroit: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Big, strong and tough, Suh better fits the physical temperament Jim Schwartz desires in the middle of his defense than Gerald McCoy.

3. Tampa Bay: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
McCoy could become a more stabilizing inside force than former Bucs star Warren Sapp(notes) and is well suited for Raheem Morris’ defense.

The Steelers Are Shopping Big Ben

by Patton on April 22, 2010

BIG BEN Now that the suspension has been handed down–6 games at the beginning of the 2010 season–the Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be over it and they are going to shop Big Ben as much as they can.  Now THEY are contacting teams about possible trade scenarios.  WOW!  This guy has won two Super Bowls and now they may not even be able to get him traded before the draft.

What are the possible scenarios?

The Rams aren’t moving off the first pick.  They’re taking Sam Bradford and that’s that.
